I was paying some thoughts this morning about religious tattoos, about what they mean and why people choose to have them.
So what religious tattoos are?
Of course, you have all seen, I guess, religious tattoos on people of all kind of social status or religion. Christian tattoos are often use, but I think that most of all I have seen people of oriental religion wearing such marks.
Non-Christian religious tattoos have become more and more used nowadays for fashion reasons, if you have watched artists, they make out of it a way of building an image, without even knowing what that tattoo is all about. Religious ones have a meaning, they are not just drawing on your skin, so people should really understand them and treat them in a more serious way.
I wanted to bring this into discussion exactly because of this, because people don’t usually know what religious tattoos mean and I feel that it is a bit a lack of respect for the cultural and religious meanings behind.
Christian tattoos are maybe more obvious, they represent scenes from the bible, a fish, a cross, a symbol of Christ, etc. These are easier to spot and understand and they are not usually made for fashion reasons. Not usually because this reason still exists even if I don’t encourage it, I don’t believe it is something to show this way. I know that all Christians should promote Christianity, but I am not sure that such tattoos, even if they have a religious meaning, are the best way to do it. Religion should be on our heart, not on our skin. However, we must accept the world is changing and there are more and more ways to express what one feels.
Are religious tattoos representing cryptic signs ok?
Well, I don’t think that religious tattoos that represent cryptic signs should be used by Christian people. Think a bit. These tattoos are usually tribal, non Christian symbols, from a pre-Christian age, from a world in need of God, looking for a religious and spiritual leader.
Such symbols usually mean something, in a very strong way. I think that the only reason for which one makes such a tattoo is from a fashion reason and this is not a good reason considering the meaning behind the symbols. Ask the person who will present you the drawing what it means, which are the origins of it, to what culture it belongs and think for yourself, don’t just jump to making religious tattoos without knowing the true significance.
